CAUSE Canada’s Canada Cup mountain bike race, formerly known as the Ziggy Gnarly, is returning to the Canmore Nordic Centre on June 20.
This is the third time in three years that Canmore has hosted the event. The past two years the event has been run by the Rundle Mountain Cycling Club. But this year they have partnered with CAUSE Canada.
Proceeds from the event will be allocated to public health teaching and HIV/AIDS prevention work in West Africa.
“We are partnering together this year to help with the organizing and to raise proceeds for CAUSE,” said CAUSE Canada events coordinator Alanna Thompson.
The course, designed the Mike Cavaliere, is a mix between double track climbs and technical single track descents. It has only been slightly modified from the last two Canada Cup races.
The track is approximately eight kilometres in length and the elite men can finish the course in about 28 minutes.
“It is a very similar course to what have been used in the past,” said Thompson.
Once again this year will be the Little Ziggy races for riders between the ages of five and 14 years. Sign up will take place before 11 a.m. on race day.
This kid’s race will be divided in to start waves with U-7, U-9, U-11, U-13 and U-15 Novice starting at 12:30 p.m.. They will be competing on an age-appropriate course separate from the Canada Cup course. U-15 Sport and U-15 Expert categories will race the full Canada Cup course.
Following the Little Ziggy races will be the CAUSE celebrity KONA Africa bike race. Celebrities will be races on specially made bike by KONA that are used by CAUSE Canada relief workers.
These bikes are made a lot more sturdy and reliable any ordinary bicycles to allow staff to get to more remote areas of West Africa more easier.
