A tourist from California was surprised to find a human skull while he was walking his dog in Bow Valley Provincial Park on Saturday night.
The man was on a trail when he spotted the skull as well as a few bones. He called the RCMP to report what he saw.
The site was contained on Saturday night and the next day, a search team was organized to look for more bones or any evidence to explain the find. Alberta Parks conservation officers, the Parks Canada canine unit, Cochrane Search and Rescue, Foothills Search and Rescue and the RCMP scoured the area.
Police say the bones were taken to the medical examiner's office in Calgary for examination.
Because the skull was still decomposing, investigators don't think that it is linked to any historic cases and that it is somewhat recent. Police don't think the death was suspicious, according to RCMP spokesman Sgt. Patrick Webb.
Police would not say if the remains might be those of a man who went missing in the park last summer, when they found his wallet and personal items on the banks of the Bow River.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked by mounties to call the RCMP Canmore detachment at 403-678-5516 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
